Americans are socking away less. The personal saving rate—which
reflects how much people have left after spending and taxes—fell to 2.3%
in the first quarter from 3.6% a year earlier. The rate leapt late last
year when fiscal-cliff concerns led some firms to give bonuses early,
but it has slid as consumers have spent more despite their incomes being
crimped by higher taxes.
