Chief Executive Vikram Pandit said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal that it was his own decision to depart from the bank.
"It was my decision," Mr. Pandit said, not the board's. "I have a
profound sense of responsibility and I wouldn't do this unless I thought
the company was exactly in the right shape to make this decision."
The Wall Street Journal reported earlier, citing people with knowledge
of the bank, Mr. Pandit's departure followed a clash with the bank's
board over strategy and the bank's performance.
