Leading indicators climbs 0.7% in August

The leading economic index for the U.S. rose 0.7% in August to 96.6, the Conference Board said Thursday. That was slightly higher than the 0.6% increase expected by economists surveyed by MarketWatch. "The latest reading points to more pep in the pace of economic activity in the near term," said Ken Goldstein, economist at the board. The coincident index, which measures current conditions, rose 0.2% in August, while the lagging index advanced by 0.3%. In July, the increase in the index was revised down a notch to 0.5%.
