Officials: Fed workers flood office with applications amid shutdown

State workers who process the claims will be busier than they've been in a while as the number of federal workers filing for unemployment in the past two days has surpassed the average for a whole year, state labor officials said.
The average number of federal workers who apply for benefits per year in Maryland is roughly 3,000, but since Tuesday, more than 6,000 have done so, officials said. The furloughed federal employees are eligible for benefits because they are technically unemployed.
Molly Martin, of Baltimore, has her share of bills to pay. She and her husband bought a home in Pigtown two weeks ago. She also has $65,000 in outstanding student loans and a car payment, but as a furloughed federal worker with the U.S. Senate, she no longer has a paycheck.
"I'm just being really careful. You don't go out anymore, you have to make sure you're being really careful at the grocery store, figuring out how to clip coupons," she told 11 News.
To help supplement her sudden income loss, Martin filed for unemployment.
"We just want to have that as something to catch us just in case," she said.
