U.S. adds fewer private-sector jobs in September than forecast: ADP »

Private-sector employment gains slightly picked up in September, as employers added 166,000 jobs, Automatic Data Processing Inc. reported Wednesday. Analysts polled by MarketWatch had expected a September gain of 180,000, compared with an originally estimated increase of 176,000 in August. On Wednesday ADP revised August's gain to 159,000. Some analysts use ADP's data to provide guidance on the Labor Department's employment report, which was scheduled to be released Friday and covers government jobs in addition to the private sector. However, a closed government won't release these data, and, as a result, markets may pay greater-than-usual attention to ADP's report.
