House Speaker John Boehner's stance that he will demand spending cuts in
exchange for raising the federal debt ceiling is "astounding" and
"disappointing," White House spokesman Jay Carney said Friday. "That
means the Speaker of the House has just declared that it is his
position that if...tea party Republicans do not get satisfaction on
their partisan wish list they will allow the United States of America to
default for the first time in our history with horrible consequences to
middle-class families everywhere," Carney said. There were scattered
reports that Boehner told some Republican House members that he wouldn't
battle the White House over the debt ceiling. But in public, Boehner
maintained a hard line. "If we are going to raise the amount of money we
can borrow, we ought to do something about our spending problem and
lack of economic growth," Boehner told reporters
