Several Persian Gulf states are demanding security guarantees and new
weapons systems from the United States in exchange for supporting a
nuclear agreement with Iran, Fox News reported on Sunday.
Leaders of the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council, which includes Saudi
Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, intend raising their
demands at a key meeting with President Barack Obama scheduled for later
this month.
Among the systems they intend demanding are additional fighter jets,
missile batteries and surveillance equipment .They also want new defense
agreements that specify the scenarios under which Washington would
intervene if they are threatened by Iran, according to US and Gulf
officials.
The demands illustrate how a nuclear deal with Iran, which is aimed at
stabilizing the Middle East, risks further militarizing an
already-volatile region, Fox said.
The six Sunni-dominated Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states will
gather in the Saudi capital on Tuesday to discuss the emerging deal with
Iran and the fighting in Yemen.
