The peak levels of American students’ performance on international standard tests, adult literacy, and newspaper circulation all came in 1975. In 1977, Jimmy Carter created the Department of Education to pay back the teachers’ unions for helping him get elected. The current education system has failed us. Despite the ever-increasing federal funding and control, it’s all been a steady downhill ride ever since.
