History is beginning to repeat itself.
In the 1866 elections, the Republicans won two-thirds majorities in
Congress and took control of national affairs. The large Republican
majorities made Congressional Democrats helpless, though they
unanimously opposed the Republicans’ Reconstruction policies. Realizing
that the old issues were holding it back, the Democrats tried a “New
Departure” that downplayed the War and stressed such issues as
corruption and white supremacy.
The first Ku Klux Klan was founded in 1866 by confederate veterans in
Tennessee; it became associated with insurgent violence
against freedmen and their allies that included lynchings but more often
consisted of direct, isolated attacks by secret groups against
individuals. The first severe period of violence in the South was
between 1868 and 1871. White Democrats attacked black and white
Republicans.
To prevent ratification of new constitutions formed during
Reconstruction, the opposition used various means to harass potential
voters. Failed attacks led to a massacre during the 1868 elections, with
the insurgents’ murders of about 1,300 voters across various southern
states ranging from South Carolina to Arkansas.
We have to stop the Democrats from repeating history.
