Income falls but poverty rate unchanged: report - MarketWatch
46 million in poverty
The U.S. Census Bureau said Wednesday that while median household income
declined last year, the poverty rate was essentially unchanged from
2010. Real median household income in 2011 stood at $50,054, down 1.5%
from the previous year. The official poverty rate was 15%, with 46.2
million people in want. "After three consecutive years of increases,
neither the poverty rate nor the number of people in poverty were
statistically different from the 2010 estimates," the Census Bureau
said. In addition, the number of people without health insurance
coverage fell from 50 million in 2010 to 48.6 million in 2011
