Illinois to lose 1,700 jobs, according to latest WARN report - chicagotribune.com

Companies with Illinois operations, including American Airlines and Sears Holdings Corp., are planning to eliminate about 1,700 jobs in the next 60 days, according to the latest monthly Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification report released by the state.

In the case of American Airlines, which reported to the state that 987 workers at O'Hare International Airport would be affected, the actual number of layoffs should be lower. In September, AMR Corp., the airline's corporate parent, said it notified more than 11,000 mechanics and ground workers that the company's bankruptcy restructuring would result in the elimination of their jobs, but that only 40 percent of that group would be laid off. The company was required by law to notify all employees that could be potentially affected. Union bumping rules allow workers in eliminated positions to take the jobs of those with less seniority, resulting in a high number of potentially affected employees.
