American Express said Thursday that it will eliminate about 5,400 jobs this year, ending 2013 with overall staff levels down 4% to 6% from the current total. The company will take a $400 million restructuring charge as result. At the same time Amex AXP +0.88% reported flat fourth-quarter adjusted profit on higher revenue and said that "cardmember spending, revenue growth and credit quality remained strong during the fourth quarter despite an uneven economy.
