House approves farm bill without food stamps
The House on Thursday defied a White House veto threat and approved a
farm bill that includes subsidized crop insurance for U.S. farmers but
doesn't include food-stamp spending. The bill, unveiled late Wednesday,
drew 216 yes votes and 208 no votes. House Republican leaders dropped
the food-stamp spending included in an earlier version to attract
conservatives, but the Senate is unlikely to pass a farm bill that doesn't include food aid for the poor
