-Canadian building permits fell for the first time in six months in June, and almost four times more than
expected, as planned construction in the residential sector declined at the sharpest monthly pace since April 2011.
The total value of building permits issued by Canadian municipalities shrank 10.3% to 6.65 billion Canadian dollars ($
6.41 billion), led by planned construction of housing in Ontario and non-residential buildings in Quebec, Statistics
Canada said Wednesday. The consensus call was for a 2.8% drop, according to a report from Royal Bank of Canada.
Residential building permits fell 12.9% to C$3.97 billion. Planned construction of multi-family dwellings, including
condominiums, plunged 18.8% and permits to build single-family homes were down 7.4%. Permits for non-residential
buildings fell 6.1% to C$2.68 billion.
