The plane went down around 4:55 a.m. local time, officials on the scene
say. There were up to five explosions after the plane went down,
witnesses heard.
The Federal Aviation Administration issued this statement:
"UPS Flight 1354, an A300 enroute from Louisville, KY to
Birmingham, AL, crashed on approach to the airport in Birmingham at
about 6 a.m. (EST) This information is preliminary and will be updated."
The front cabin, which still appears to be intact, is separated from the burning fuselage.
It appears to be about 50 yards from the place where the fuselage continues to burn.
There is a residential area west of the crash site, but it does not appear to be affected by the crash.
Authorities have set up a staging area near the crash site.
