But a deeper look into other measures of the job market shows a more nuanced picture. The number of Americans participating in the labor force is lower now than at any point since 1978. The labor force participation rate, which is the percentage of the available workforce that's employed or actively looking for work, has been steadily declining since its high of 67.3 percent in early 2000, driven in large part by the waves of retiring baby boomers, or those born between 1946 and 1964.
