Patriot Coal layoffs begin taking effect on Thursday.
In a statement released in October, the company said it expects to
lay off more than 1,900 workers in Boone and Kanawha counties over the
next two weeks.
The layoffs include 483 workers at Speed Mining in Dawes, 288 workers
at Wildcat Energy in Eskdale, 161 workers at Midland Trail Energy,118
at Remington LLC in Eskdale and six at Little Creek Dock in Charleston.
Pam White, the county administrator in Boone, said a total of 970 workers in her county could be affected.
Patriot Coal filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May, its assets were
auctioned off in September. Blackhawk Mining will take over most of
Patriot's operations.
As a formality, these miners are going to be laid off starting
Thursday until Nov. 5, but the hope is that every miner will be rehired
with Blackhawk Mining.
