Grocery store chain Fresh and Easy announced Wednesday that it will close 97 stores and layoff all of its 3,000 employees.
The chain originated in the United Kingdom, and migrated to the United States in 2007.
Experts
said the chain did well in its native country, but the British-style
layout isn’t something shoppers in the US are used to navigating.
In
2013, the company was bought out of bankruptcy by a California-based
business. In a statement, the company said it had been trying to break
even during the past two years. Fifty stores were closed during that
time.
There was no immediate word on when the stores would close, but the first round of layoffs are expected as early as next Friday.
