Right before a secret GOP ballot on his speaker bid, Mr. McCarthy
stunned colleagues on Thursday by withdrawing from what appeared to be
an easy race to succeed Mr. Boehner. Behind the scenes, however, Mr.
McCarthy had concluded that what had become a painful and potentially
ugly process of securing the required 218 votes would ultimately hobble
him in doing the job.
“It was only going to get worse,” he said
in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. “You’ve got the debt
ceiling coming up, and everything else. This was for the good of the
team.”
