Alcoa will lay off nearly 500 people and end its aluminum-smelting
operations here in 2016, news that has left North Country residents
reeling.
The
decision comes less than two years after the company pledged to invest
millions in upgrades to its Alcoa East plant and create a job-training
program to develop a highly skilled workforce to handle its technically
advanced work.
Company
spokeswoman Monica Orbe said Thursday that 487 jobs will be lost at
Massena, "but the cast house at Massena West, which produces value-add
shaped products, will continue to operate.
"The Alcoa Forgings and Excrusions facility in Massena is unaffected" and will continue to employ about 220 people, she said.
The
company will also lay off 800 workers at its plants in Washington state
and eliminate 135 refining jobs at its facility in Point Comfort,
Texas.
While Alcoa is located in St. Lawrence County, its workforce comes from Franklin County as well.
