House passes bill that would tighten rules for admitting Syrian refugees
The House of Representatives passed a bill Thursday that would put new
restrictions on refugees from Syria or Iraq who are seeking to enter the
U.S. The White House has said President Barack Obama would veto the
Republican-authored bill, which comes less than a week after the attacks
in Paris. The bill would require heads of agencies including the
Federal Bureau of Investigation to certify refugees are not security
threats before they are allowed into the country. Immigration from Syria
has come under scrutiny following the Paris attacks, in which one of
suspects posed as a Syrian refugee. The vote was 289 to 137, with 47
Democrats joining Republicans in approving the bill.
