The US Treasury may soon announce a suspension of penny production,
something they hope will spur Congress towards eliminating the one-cent
coin.
The Treasury also plans to revamp currency designs to include a woman on either the 10-dollar bill or the 20-dollar bill.
Initially,
Treasury Secretary Jack Lew wanted to put Susan B Anthony on the $10
bill but instead he's considering a public nomination process.
Many
places with currencies of similar value to the US dollar have
eliminated low-denomination coins like the penny because they cost more
to produce than they're worth and using rounding in cash
transactions. However, the zinc lobby is evidently a powerful force in
the US.
