LA mayor vows to fight Trump administration attempt to strip ‘sanctuary city’ funding
Responding
to the latest warnings by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions that
Department of Justice funds will be withheld from sanctuary cities,
Mayor Eric Garcetti said Monday he will fight efforts by the Trump
administration to take away federal funding needed for law enforcement
in Los Angeles.Garcetti said that such actions would be unconstitutional, adding that the city’s policies are “designed to keep our residents safe.”
“Slashing funds for first-responders, for our port and airport, for counterterrorism, crime-fighting and community-building serves no one — not this city, not the federal government, not the American people,” he said. “We will fight to protect the safety and dignity of all Angelenos, and we will work closely with our representatives in Congress to make sure that Los Angeles does not go without federal resources that help protect millions of people every day.”

After Attorney General Jeff Sessions reiterated the federal government’s threat
to block funding for so-called “sanctuary cities,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel
doubled down on his own promise that Chicago will “continue to welcome”
immigrants.
“I’ve always seen
Chicago as a welcoming city,” Emanuel said in an interview from the
Nasdaq stock exchange in New York on Monday.
Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson told the House Subcommittee on Illegal Immigration that sanctuary cities “have become magnets for illegal aliens, some of which have violent criminal records.”
“If these sanctuary cities are going to harbor and conceal criminal illegal aliens from ICE, which is in direct violation of Title 8 of the U.S. Code, federal arrest warrants should be issued for their elected officials,” Hodgson said. “Our citizens would be safer if we never stopped enforcing immigration law and if we never formed or turned a blind eye toward sanctuary cities.”

California immigration town hall to highlight state’s red-blue divide…
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Reuters) – Liberal California was set to square off against conservative elements in the state at a town hall meeting on immigration on Tuesday night featuring the director of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.
Sheriff Scott Jones, a supporter of President Donald Trump’s with strong backing in the region’s conservative suburbs, invited acting Immigrations and Customs Enforcement Director Thomas Homan to the public forum.
Democratic officials in the area, which has a population of 2 million and is located about 90 miles east of San Francisco, have opposed the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown and are leading a charge in the legislature to fight his policies.
