USPS begins closing/consolidating plants - KCTV 5
The US Postal Service will begin consolidating and closing dozens of mail processing plants as soon as next week.
A last-minute effort by the American Postal Workers Union to stop the plan failed on Friday.
Some 48 plants across the country will be impacted by the consolidation over the next two months.
The agency also says it's reducing the size of its workforce.
It offered buyouts and retirement packages to 21,000 postmasters as well as 45,000 mail handlers.
A Postal Service spokesman says the move is critical because the agency lost more than $5 billion last year.
