Collectors could be forgiven for getting whiplash Monday at a
Christie’s sale that saw bidders offer up feverish prices for some art
trophies yet sniff at others altogether — a rollicking volatility that
could portend a market nearing its peak.
Christie’s International
sold Amedeo Modigliani’s portrait of a “Reclining Nude” to Chinese
collectors Liu Yiqian and his wife, Wang Wei, for $170.4 million, the
second-highest price ever paid at auction for a work of art.
The
price established a new auction high for the Italian modernist painter,
who is known for painting demure women with swan-like necks and opaque
eyes. The price also fell just shy of the auction industry’s current
overall titleholder, Pablo Picasso’s nearly $180 million “Women of
Algiers (Version O).” which sold at Christie’s in May.
The 0000000.1% are moving cash around folks, purchasing stores of value, stores of wealth, and Art is for sure one way to rid oneself of worthless dollars.
